Topofthegame is a Paul Nichols inmate who I have been following since last season. Highly progressive and improving with each run, he can really make a name for himself this season.

He did me a good favour last February when landing some big bets to win a competitive stayers handicap hurdle at Sandown.

Next time out Topofthegame appeared in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham festival. Once again he carried the hard earned of yours truly at odds of 14/1 only to be nabbed close home by a Mullins horse. It was still a great effort to finish second and this strapping son of Flemensfirth out of a Mister Lord mare was then wisely put away for the rest of the season by the astute Nichols.

Reported to have progressed very well both physically and mentally over the summer months, he continued his relentless improvement with probably another career best in his first run of the current season. That was in a red hot novice chase at Exeter over an inadequate trip of 2 miles and 3 furlongs. He produced an incredible performance that day to finish second to the Triumph Hurdle winning Defi Du Seuil.

Left a good twenty lengths at the start, he was detached for most of the race before finally making up the lost ground under a very patient Harry Cobden. Jumping well, he still had enough left despite the bad start to beat off the rest and chase home the multiple Grade 1 winning winner.

With Nichols probably the greatest trainer of chasers in modern times and Topofthegame looking like he is made of the right stuff, then I really believe that this horse can be a staying chaser of the very highest calibre and win some of the biggest races.

Take my advice and absolutely keep on the right side of this horse.
